Applied Mineralogy

PetraScience is an internationally recognized provider of applied mineralogy services for the mining, exploration and environmental industries. We employ field observations, petrography, short wave infrared spectroscopy, SEM and XRD analysis to solve exploration, mine development and remediation problems. Our projects are conducted on a detailed to regional-scale and involve field and lab-based work. We work actively with clients to design effective strategies and emphasize communication throughout the project. PetraScience has experience working with numerous deposit types including:

  • epithermal (high/low sulphidation)
  • porphyry
  • skarn
  • VMS
  • Fe-oxide-Cu-Au
  • uranium

Environmental and Industrial Applications

PetraScience has performed petrographic and SEM-based studies in the areas of tailings characterization, carbonate mineral composition determination and backfill cement characterization.

Alteration Mapping and Target Definition

PetraScience uses short-wave infrared (SWIR) spectroscopy to map alteration mineral zonation directly in the field or in the laboratory. SWIR is used to distinguish between different fine-grained hydrous and carbonate mineral phases and to track changes in mineral composition. SWIR studies have been successful in mapping epithermal deposits (high/low sulphidation), intrusion-related depositis and VMS deposits.

Short Courses

Short courses and training classes on hydrothermal systems, alteration and spectral data collection and interpretation are available. The courses range from multi-day field courses to intensive one-day workshops. All courses include a 'hands on' component for maximum benefit to the participants.
